Paint the whole world with...
...A rainbow! I'm sure some British readers of a certain age joined in and sang along there. The rest of you are wondering what the smeg we're talking about. Well, you see Rainbow was a kid's TV show when I was but knee-high to a Jawa. It featured Bungle the amazingly camp, gay bear, George the amazingly gay pink hippo and Zippy who was presumably the subservient George's dominant S&M master. Check this great clip from the show sent to me by the Rev. Sandy. Takes a moment or two to load, but it is worth it! You have to ask yourself, what were the makers thinking? It's a kid's show so we can get away with this? Or were they having a laugh?
Hi Joe
ReplyDeleteI hate to disillusion everybody, but the rainbow clip was a special made for a cast party with deliberate inuendo, it was never actually broadcast. It is however, hilarious, and well worth watching.
True - it was part of one of the infamous "Christmas Tapes" that engineers on both sides of the BBC/ITV divide produced to entertain themselves and their colleagues at the christmas parties, and later at home. These days the tapes are like hen's teeth.

My childhood memories of Rainbow have been ruined forever!
ReplyDeleteBut that was hilarious!
Cheers! :)
That clip was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. And they all said it with a straight face like it was completely normal. Excuse me, I have to go play with my friends balls.
ReplyDeleteZippy's voice really does sound quite dirty-old-man all of a sudden, with his "one-skin, eh, two-skin....". Kept me laughing for ages that, thanks...
ReplyDeletethat was fantastic. I would love to see any more of these christmas tapes if they were of that kind of standard.
ReplyDeleteYou're right - There wasn't just "oo-er missus", sexual innuendo in Rainbow, however you are wrong about the power exchange. Zippy was actually the submissive.
ReplyDeleteZippy was a regular of a sordidly enjoyable S&M "Rainbow Fetish Munch", his zip-face, a primitive gimp mask, which he wore while being flogged senseless by Bungle.
Just in-case you're wondering, we know all about gimp masks, as we are "THE Komedy Kollective", the madcap sneakfreaks who turn up at theatre press gatherings in kinky rubber outfits.
